9.Get Fast Access to System Settings
Posted by ROHIT

You don't have to pass through Control Panel to get to the System Properties dialog box.

Hold down the Windows key and press Break to open this handy dialog box immediately.

No Windows key?

Create a shortcut to Sysdm.cpl (you'll find it in the %systemroot%System32 folder) and place it anywhere in the Programs menu.

Then open the shortcut's Properties dialog box and assign it an easy-to-remember keyboard shortcut such as Ctrl+Alt+Shift+S.

Some laptop keyboards may have separate keys for Break and Pause, and you may find this dialog box opens if you hold the Windows key and press Pause.

This tip applies to computers that are part of a domain. For stand-alone or peer-to-peer networks, the custom screen appears just before the Welcome screen.

You may need to have an administrator account on your computer to make changes to the registry. Incorrectly editing the registry may severely damage your system. At the very least, you should back up any valued data on the computer before making changes to the registry.

11.SPEED UP RAM UPTO 1.5 TIMES

Windows XP uses virtual memory that consists of a so-called swap file, which is a very large data file generated on your hard disk. The operating system uses this swap file to store its temporary data, when your PC runs out of physical memory.

This occurs when you have many software programs open in your taskbar and/or when your PC is equipped with insufficient physical memory.

The usage of virtual memory affects system performance dramatically, because the data speed of a hard disk is much lower than the data speed of physical memory. You will notice a total slowdown of your system and an increase in hard disk activity when Windows XP uses the swap file instead of physical memory.

Upgrading this memory can be a good idea. Since Windows XP is a real memory-eating monster a minimum of 128 MB is required to run it smoothly. If your system is low on memory, just increase the virtual memory to a fixed size.

Follow these steps to alter the virtual memory settings:

1. Click on Start - My Computer

2. Click the Advanced tab in the System Properties window

3. Click the Settings button in the Performance field.

4. Click the Change button in the Performance Options window

You can multiply the virtual memory size by 1.5 times the amount of physical memory. So if your system has 128 MB of physical memory, you can set the amount to 192 MB.

Click the Custom-size radio-button and enter 192 in both the Initial size (MB) and Maximum size (MB) fields.

Click the Set and OK button to apply your setting
